Committed to Green Skills and Careers

Supporting a more sustainable future for Cumbria

Introduction

Supporting Green Skills and Careers development

We are expanding our facilities and developing new courses to support a more sustainable future for Cumbria.

A green career lets you learn new skills in different industries while helping to protect our planet.

The UK government aims to reach net zero in all sectors of the economy by 2050.

What are we doing to support Green Skills and Careers?

What are we doing to support Green Skills and Careers?

  • • Fantastic facilities

New low carbon renewable training areas set to be installed in our Construction Skills Centre to build skills in air and ground source heat pumps, solar photovoltaics, battery storage and solar thermal

  • • Exciting options

New courses and apprenticeships are being designed in areas including retrofit and low carbon to meet skills demands in Cumbria and beyond

Developments

The local skills improvement fund has enabled Lakes College to repurpose one of our existing workshops and transform it into a Green Energy and Skills Centre.

The first stage of work on this centre is now complete with the development of nine workspaces and the upskilling of a newly-assembled Green Team at the college.

Stage two of the work is scheduled for this summer and will involve the installation of equipment to deliver training and upskilling for the local and regional workforce in air/ground source heat pumps, solar photovoltaic and battery storage, solar thermal and retrofit.

This will help to fill the existing skills gap in the green energy sector and support the drive to net zero.

A new Level 3 apprenticeship following the Low Carbon Heating Technician standard is also in development.
