If you are passionate about working in the early years and education sector, this qualification builds the foundation to embark on a career working with children developing knowledge and skills through your study and working practice in placement.

Depending on pathway learners can progress into jobs including nursery practitioner, teaching assistant, learning mentor, special educational needs and disability (SEND) teaching assistant.

The course covers course units including: understanding the education and childcare sector up to age 19; theoretical approaches to child development; safeguarding, wellbeing and health and safety; understanding and managing behaviour; equality and diversity; special educational needs and disability (SEND); working in partnership with others and outside agencies; reflective practice.

Our tutors are experts in their field with experience of working in the education areas which they are teaching.

Over the two years you will attend two days each week on placement and spend three days studying in college.

In your first year you will study the core components from birth to 19.

First year exams include an employer-set project and two further exams on core knowledge.

In your second year you will focus on occupational specialism, which further develops your skills and knowledge for the workplace or progression onto further study at university.
You will study either the Assisting Teaching or Early Years Educator occupational specialism.
As part of your second year you will be observed in practice in your industry placement and undertake two further exams.

This programme is the equivalent of three A-Levels and mixes classroom learning and 'on-the-job' experience in an industrial placement for a minimum of 315 hours over the duration of the course.
