Lakes College’s catering and hospitality learners had the privilege of preparing and serving a festive Christmas lunch to 130 Distington pensioners at the college’s Graduate Restaurant.

The annual event, which has been a tradition for many years, continues to provide invaluable experience for students while offering a warm, welcoming environment for the local community.

John Cowen, treasurer of the Distington Senior Citizens Committee, shared his gratitude for the event: “We have been coming to Lakes College for as long as I can remember. It’s perfect for us as the college can host more than 130 people and we have a full three-course meal.

“I could not praise or fault the learners and staff enough—they are excellent from the moment we walk through the door. Everything is just perfect.

“After we are done having food, the learners come and sit and chat with everyone, getting to know them, and taking part in the entertainment. It’s a day that a lot of people in the community look forward to all year.”

Volunteers from the area and the college’s facilities team played a vital role in preparing the canteen and decorating the venue. The learners showcased their culinary and hospitality skills, creating a memorable experience for all that attend.

Charles Milne, Level 2 Catering Learner, shared his experience: “I was on the front of house team, serving everyone their food and helping in any way I could,” he said.

“The pensioners were really nice and friendly. It was a really fun event. It lets the pensioners come out and socialise with others in a nice atmosphere with good food and the opportunity to relax.”

Aiden Creer, Level 2 Catering Learner, added: “Having the event helps us because when we work in the catering industry in the future, we will experience rush-hour services and large-scale events and parties. This gives us a chance to practice serving for a large number of people.”

The day was filled with joy and celebration, with highlights including a dance with customers and live entertainment in the afternoon.

The event highlighted the importance of community engagement and the development of essential skills for students in the hospitality industry.
