Students put through their paces in Army jobs showcase

PROBLEM-SOLVING, leadership and teamwork skills were put to the test by the British Army as they challenged Lakes College students to consider a career in the military.

Learners were put through their paces by the 4th Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment to demonstrate the variety of career opportunities in the armed forces.

The regiment visited the college’s campus at Lillyhall this month to run a series of activities for students, including safe weapon handling, logic puzzles and a physical task which involved moving a group of students from one location to another without touching the floor, using limited resources.

Kyra Adams who studies the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity, said: “It’s been great to develop leadership and teamwork skills in a different context, develop communication skills listening to each other, and see how everybody learns and develops in their own way.”

Learners were given the chance to speak to members of the regiment about the wide range of possible jobs within the army and learn about what the regiment does and how they could get involved.

Sonny O’Connor, a Level 3 Uniformed Services student, said: “The activities have been fun and forced me to think about how to achieve things in a range of different methods.”

The session was overseen by WO2 Lorrie Anderson-Booth MBE who was impressed with what she saw from the learners.

She said: “The students engaged with the activities and worked together to successfully complete the tasks.

“They were keen on knowing more about the army so we hope that the learners take something important away and that no matter what walk of life they’re from, they are welcomed by the army reserves.”
